Growing Pains: Kansas University Union Gallery
Growing Pains
The Growing Pains exhibition includes 20 different pieces created from my first photography class to my last photography class. These pieces utilize a wide range of art making processes including, but not limited to, gelatin silver prints, cyanotypes, glass cyanotypes, book making, archival pigment prints, and sculpture. The works explore my experiences as a transgender male, the loss of my father and his battle with cancer, and the loss of my childhood family dog. I created each piece to help me cope with harsh emotions that I was unable to deal with in the past or dealt with through temporary solutions that led to even stronger emotions later. The featured piece is a glass cyanotype portrait that mirrors the self-portraits I created during my photo 1 course, Body History, before I was out as a transgender male. While Body History was exploring the characteristics of my body that I was embarrassed or ashamed of, Growing Panes, explores my body as I see it now that I have started to transition. The pieces in this show started out as a very dysphoric and uncomfortable experience, but in the process of cutting up and processing images multiple times over months of work I began to look at my body parts as pieces of art instead of pieces of my body. This process while painful in the beginning, became a method of growth and healing in the end, and left me loving my body more than I ever had. Throughout my art making experience at ESU I have become fascinated with utilizing subtle overlays and debossing to add a personal experience between the artwork and the viewers who look at art with the intention of seeing it. Through these art making processes and topics, I hope to impact the way my viewers experience and perceive the world they live in with hope that someday the world will be more understanding, accepting, and inviting to people as they truly are. |

Paperworks VII
The Paperworks VII exhibition was at the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, MO. My piece, Timmy Lew Wright, was selected along with 38 other pieces out of 287 works submitted. This exhibition showcased work from 34 artists from nineteen states, plus the United Kingdom, Slovakia, and China.
The show Paperworks VII was created to help show case paper and the various ways it can be used to create works of art. My book about my father utilized handmade paper made with flowers from my father's funeral and Stonehenge. This book also showcased the power of paper and subtle overlays by having all writing debossed on the pages instead of written with ink. The writing incorporated is the actual handwriting from multiple people that were close to my father throughout his life, and images from his life were DASS transferred onto the pages to add color and small windows of insight into his life and who he was.
